FreeRip is aimed at managing audio files. Despite its name, it can help you not only rip audio CDs but also convert between audio formats and edit audio file tags.
It is a light, intuitive and unsophisticated application. The interface will have three different layouts according to the function you select from the first button on the toolbar: ripper, converter and tagger. In relation to this, I do not think the way it works is obvious enough, and perhaps some users may find themselves wondering what this button is for. However, you can also switch functions via the View menu command.
In order to rip audio from a CD, you start by inserting the disc and letting the program update the track list. The tool uses an alternative Internet database, called Open CD Index, to access the information about the disc. This database has the advantage of being collaborative so any user can share information about audio CDs. Several target audio formats are available, including WAV, MP3, WMA, FLAC and OGG. Similarly, the program supports converting files between any of the above mentioned formats. You can also edit tags with the help of the integrated search functions. This way, you can search for additional information about the artist, such as video, photos and lyrics.
In general, FreeRip is not as sophisticated as other similar applications. It did a fine job extracting audio from a disc but the process of saving them to the hard disk seems a little confusing to me. One piece of advice: if you decide to install this application, be careful not to let it install a probably unnecessary browser toolbar and change your default search engine.
